Sometimes I go out of my way to buy a special Christmas gift for Martie, and when I do, I find it hard to wait until Christmas to give it to her! So, the best thing that I can do is to drop hints along the way: “You’re going to love it!” “It’s what you’ve always wanted!” “It’s something you can wear!”
I can’t help but think that’s the way it is with our God and His greatest gift of all: the Christmas gift of Jesus!
Early on in the scriptures, God began dropping hints about the gift. In Genesis 3, He hinted that this gift will be from the seed of a woman and that this child would crush the head of Satan. Then in Genesis 12, God drops another hint that the gift will come through the line of Abraham—so, this gift would be Jewish. God then hints in 2 Samuel 7 that the gift of His son will be a King who will sit on the throne of David forever!
This Christmas you and I will often see the image of God’s gift to us lying in a manger … whether on Christmas cards, in store windows or perhaps in a nativity scene on your mantle. And when you do, what will you see?
You need to see more than just a baby—you need to see a King—a conquering King who will indeed crush the head of Satan, who will reign over all the affairs of mankind, who will bring justice against all that is wrong in this world and who will offer peace to troubled hearts!
Christmas is the occasion of a royal birth … and it should keep our hearts singing through all the rush and crush of Christmas the words of that familiar song: “all hail King Jesus, all hail Emmanuel, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, bright morning star!”
